Celebrate Bike Month on Ward 10’s newest trail

June is Bike Month in Toronto as we raise awareness of the benefits of cycling and the great bike trails in the city. One of the hidden gems in Ward 10 is our fantastic off-road bike trails. These trails are a great way to safely cycle through our beautiful parks, including Earl Bales Park and G. Ross Lord Park.

New this year is the Finch Hydro Corridor Multi-Use Trail which runs north of Finch Avenue West between Yonge and Dufferin streets. This trail is part of an expansion that adds approximately 30 kilometres of new and upgraded off-road bike trails to Toronto’s Bikeway Network — the largest expansion of the city’s trail system in a single year.

The new trails also include various streetscape improvements such as benches, pedestrian-scale lighting and bike parking.

To celebrate the opening of the Finch Hydro Corridor trail, we will be holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community bike ride on June 10 at 1 p.m. in the Esther Shiner Stadium parking lot, 5720 Bathurst St. Everyone is welcome to attend and there will be refreshments, raffles and prizes. This event is being held in conjunction with the North York Cycling and Pedestrian Committee.

My office is also looking at creating a continuous off-road trail that fully traverses the ward from north to south as well as considering developing a trail that would lead right to the Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre. I will keep you updated on these exciting initiatives.

There are also great things happening across the city. At city council we endorsed the direction and implementation of the Mayor’s Bike Plan comprising of a 100 km network of off-street bike trails throughout Toronto.
