Cynthia Rea always dreamed of having her own boutique.

With the opening of Black Daffodil on Dundas Street West, those dreams have finally come true.

Having designed and sold her clothing line in the city for the past few years, the George Brown fashion studies grad finally found her opportunity to open a boutique after discovering the Junction.

“It’s a great neighbourhood,” says Rea. “And for me, it was the best option because it was financially possible for me to have a store here.”

Although she looked at retail spaces in other areas of the city, Rea finally settled on the artsy locale to open up shop.

“This community is really growing,” she says. “I love it and I’m so excited to be here.”

The store is an airy space filled with unique women’s clothing and accessories that are sure to catch the eye. Colourful patterns and classy décor mesh with the designer’s personal style.

“I love 1940s era fashions,” says Rea. “So my designs are a cross between vintage silhouettes and modern fabric and cuts.”

The majority of Rea’s wares are made directly on-site in her personal design studio, but she also showcases local designers. Whether it’s jewellery, handbags or dresses, every item in the store has been hand-picked by Rea who prides herself on paying attention to the smallest details. New items are added every two weeks and Rea works hard to keep her stock fresh and please her clientele.

“Most of my customers are local career women who are looking for fun and funky clothes to wear to work,” Rea says. “They need appropriate clothes that still get noticed. Not your everyday, run-of-the-mill kind of stuff.”

With a large selection of fashion-forward designs, Rea has no problem providing her customers with the looks they want at affordable prices. Although she has focused on dresses and skirts, she may even start designing for men in the future. For now, she’s just looking forward to making her mark in the neighbourhood.
