Lox theft sees fish pulled from shelves

Highland Farms is still stocking the tasty treat but customers must request it

Customers looking for lox at the Highland Farms supermarket at 4750 Dufferin St. may be told to go fish.

Due to the recurring theft of lox, a type of salmon fillet, workers in the store’s meat department have decided to remove the fish from display shelves.

“They’ve been having problems with people stealing the salmon, which I guess is a high ticket item,” said Detective Craig Brister from Toronto Police Service’s 32 Division. “I know there has been enough of a problem for them to change their policies to how they display the fish.”

The location’s meat manager said customers can still purchase lox, they just have to ask an employee who will retrieve it from the back.

According to police, the salmon was stolen at sometime, if not multiple times, between March 8-10. Police would not say how much lox was taken. An investigation is on-going and authorities say they are looking to identify the culprit.

“There is a suspect and we’re just looking to identify him now,” Brister said.

Anyone with information regarding this incident can contact police at 416-808-3200 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
