Residents of St. Paul's welcomed incumbent Joe Mihevc back into council with open arms on election night, solidifying the incumbent's immense popularity in St. Paul's Ward 21.
Mihevc eased back into the seat he's held for the past 15 years, despite a four-candidate race that faced divided views on contentious issues like the St. Clair Ave. streetcar right-of-way (ROW).
With his family by his side, Mihevc strolled into a hall in the Hungarian House at 9 p.m. amidst rousing cheers and applause from his supporters.
Moments before his arrival, Mihevc was declared the winner on result listings televised on two monitors near the stage.
Mihevc captured almost 57 per cent of the vote (8,096), while runner-up John Sewell pulled in 23 per cent (3,326 votes). John Adams received 19 per cent of the vote (2,713), while relative unknown Tony Corpuz gained 1.05 per cent with 150 votes.
At the party, Mihevc called on all St. Paul's West residents, including those who didn't vote for him, to come together and help continue building the community.
"Elections are a divisive time but post-election it's up to me to build consensus again," he said, after chatting with dozens of well-wishers who clamoured to shake his hand.
Meanwhile, at his campaign office near Eglinton and Bathurst, John Sewell conceded defeat by saying voters didn't accept his offer for change but he respected their choice.
When asked earlier in the evening if he thought the right-of-way issue helped or hurt his campaign, Sewell simply reiterated his stance on the matter.
"ROW is a very bad idea," he said. "I would never analyze that, I'm running on what I believe in."
