Injeanius author turns childhood addiction into how-to crafts book

By Lorianna De Giorgio

July 9, 2006

ELLEN WARRICK: Has a factional alter-ego in Injeanuity, a crafts book for girls written by Warrick and illustrated by Toronto artist Bernice Lum.
Ellen Warwick’s favourite memories of her preteen years revolve around two simple things – a bottle of glue and her trusty children-friendly scissors.

The Dufferin St. and St. Clair Ave. author is a self-proclaimed craft addict whose best years were spent in her bedroom turning used items into precious treasures.

And with a new book series, the 37-year-old is passing on that love.

Her recently released book, Injeanuity, is the first title in the Kids Can Press Planet Girl series of books created for girls aged 10 to 14 to learn how to explore their own style and creativity through Do-It-Yourself crafts.

In the book, which is illustrated by Toronto artist, Bernice Lum, Warwick shows girls how to turn an old, ratty pair of jeans into innovative creations.

Old or unwanted jeans are no longer destined for the back of your closet or the Goodwill bin, she said

"Girls can learn how to be adventurous and take personal risks by expressing their personal style. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to look good," said Warwick, who authored Stuff for Your Space, a step-by-step guide for children to make furniture and accessories for their bedroom, in 2004

In an Injeanuity chapter entitled "New Threads from Old Duds," Warwick shows girls how to turn jeans into a wrap skirt or laced halter top.

Throughout the book’s 80-pages, she also teaches girls how to make a footstool, wallet, messenger bag and book cover.

All readers need to know is how to sew, said Warwick, adding she takes care of that in the book’s first section where she teaches girls simple sewing tips.

"I love that age," Warwick said of writing books for preteen girls. "It’s the age I feel closest to. If I had a mental age, it would be about 11."

Her second book in the series, Stuff to Hold Your Stuff, a practical guide to creating bedroom accessories, will be released this fall.

Future book themes include a jewellery book, create-your-own accessories guide and a step-by-step guide to knitting and crochet.

"I just want to put something fun, fresh and exciting out there for girls to do," she said. "I wish there were books like this when I was 12."
