In the tradition of the classic MGM movie, the legendary Broadway musical and even more modern hits like THE WIZ and WICKED… The Civic Light-Opera Company is very pleased to bring back its original musical version of the classic story, The Wonderful Wizard of Ozby L. Frank Baum. The beloved family classic plays from Dec. 1-19 at Fairview Library Theatre – just in time for the holidays! First staged in 2000 in celebration of the centennial of the novel’s original publication, it closely follows the original Baum story with an enchanting musical score by James P. Doyle, a talented composer/lyricist from Texas and an authority on all music of Oz, and book by well-known Toronto writer/director Joe Cascone, who has been an “Oz-fanatic” since childhood. With its world-premiere in 2000, The Civic Light-Opera Company recorded and released an original cast CD of the songs from the show. This new production stars Olivia Stupka and Alisa Berindea (alternating performances) as Dorothy Gale from Kansas. Her friends — the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion —are played to perfection by (respectively) Damien Gulde, Bryan Chamberlain and David Haines, the latter two reprising their roles from the original production. The cast is rounded out by many other Civic Light Opera Company favourites including Joe Cascone himself as L. Frank Baum.
