Huge knitting circle hopes to break record

Junctioneers, start your knitting needles.

On June 12, knitters will convene at the corner of Dundas Street West and Pacific Avenue in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record of the largest number of people knitting in one place.

The undertaking is being organized by Streetknit, an organization devoted to making and collecting warm clothing for those in need. the event is being supported by local businesses Wise Daughters and That’s Women’s Work.

The event, taking place on the Junction Train Platform, coincides with Worldwide Knit in Public Day.

Mary Breen, owner of Wise Daughters Craft Market at Bloor and Dundas, says knitting circles are hugely popular, especially among the local arts crowd.

“We hope to attract people from all across Toronto, but the Junction is very much behind it.”

Breen hosts a knitting club once a month, and her store is a drop-off location for clothing destined for Streetknit.  

In addition to the record attempt, attendees will be treated to music, games, crafts and knitting lessons. Attendees must bring their own chair, wool and needles, though there will be supplies available for purchase.

The event is taking place June 12, from 1-4 p.m. at 2954 Dundas St. West.
